Why Do TV Shows Get Cancelled | How Bad Things Happen to Good Programs

Being in advertising, I am often called upon by depressed friends who have lost their favorite program and dramatically ask "Why do TV shows get cancelled!!." They think that if THEY love a show, EVERYBODY must love it…and they want to know how another show as stupid as “insert any sitcom with a laugh track” could possibly still be on the air.

My answers during these emotional counseling sessions are, unfortunately, not very cathartic and tend to sour my friends’ idealistic TV fantasies. There is only 1 reason that programs exist on TV, to MAKE MONEY for those who broadcast them…and the only way for these programs to make money for broadcasters is through advertising…the only way advertisers will want to be on/around a program is if the popularity is there to support it....It’s a viscous cycle, not suitable for the faint of heart.

Sadly as I watch some programs I enjoy this year, I can already predict the fate of several that won’t make it...I’ll compare just 2 focusing solely on promotional content (a revenue generating model that does not completely rely on traditional commercial sales or hinge on ratings and is seen primarily in reality shows….which is why there are so many damn reality shows).
