During the week of 12/23, America took a brief break from holiday programming to watch and tweet about one of our most heartwarming Christmas traditions, wrestling. WWE programs (including Monday Night RAW, WWE Tribute to the Troops, and WWE Friday Night Smackdown!) racked up an impressive 7,662,000 impressions on social media during the week topped by RAW (#RAW) with over 11,113,000 tweets most of which were fueled by news of the exciting return of Dave Bautista. Staged or otherwise, America loves its wrestling and the traditional cable ratings agree.

If you’ve been reading any of our Top 20 TV ratings reports this year, then you know that either NFL or NCAA Football sits atop the ratings each week. You’ve also heard us talk about how multi-screen ad elements are critical to the success of campaigns. So now, to ring in the New Year, we’re going to show why leveraging the multi-screen elements of sports on air and online will guarantee a successful 2014.

Starting with the NFL, online viewership ad engagement numbers are staggering. Recently, Adap.TV came out with some strong data on the power of video ads with NFL online viewing. Business Insider contributor Greg Satell recently broke down his “Top 4 Marketing Buzzwords” that are nonsense. These are hype words that used to mean something, but are now just thrown around in an attempt to impress the advertiser. They’ve lost all substance. We agree with Mr. Satell and would love a chance to bust up these buzzwords which we constantly hear/see in advertising pitches. We also felt it necessary to add a few additional overused terms of our own.

1. Engagement Strategies:

This is easily the most frequently overused buzzword by marketing professionals. Outside of marketing, it has multiple meanings: Betrothal, A limited period of employment, A hostile encounter or battle, And of course the act of engaging…But as far as the marketing world is concerned, you’ll have trouble getting any semblance of a solid definition anymore.

Buzzword Buster: Engagement is not a strategy it is a term best used as a reminder. If you plan to post content to social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, etc…) it’s better be relevant to the consumer on the other end. Your posts should make a person say, “tell me more,” not, “leave me alone.”

Simplified: If you only talk about yourself, people will stop listening

All too often we’re so eager to pump volumes and volumes of content out into the interweb that we forget to actually LISTEN to our customers. And if we’re not listening, how in the hell are we going to engage with them?
